Why do we get hiccups???
Hiccups are one of life's little mysteries. They can come on suddenly and disappear just as quickly. They can be embarrassing, annoying,or even painful.
But what are hiccups exactly, and why do we get them?
They caused by a spasm of the diaphragm, the muscle that separates the chest from the abdomen. When you hiccup, the diagpram contracts involuntarily, causing your glottis ( the opening between your vocal cords) to close. This creates the characteristic "hic" sound.
There are many different things that can trigger hiccups including:
π Eating too quickly or too much
π Drinking carbonated beverages
π Swallowing air
πBeing excited or stressed
π Sudden changes in temperature
π Certain medical conditions such as acid reflux, gastroesophageal reflux disease GERD or asthma.
In most cases, they are harmless and go away on their own within a few minutes. However, if your hiccup lasts longer than 48hours, or if they are accompanied by other symptoms such as chest pain, difficult breathing, or fever, you should see a doctor.
There are many different folk remedies for hiccups but there is no scientific evidence that any of them actually works. Some common remedies includes:
π Drinking water
π Holding your breath
π Pulling on your tongue
πBeing startled.
So next time you get the hiccups, don't worry. Just relax, take a few deep breaths and try to enjoy the ride. Afterall, they are just a harmless reminder that our bodies are complex and mysterious machine.
